Right Person, Wrong Seat

Hiring is part science, part art. Know who to invest in and who to transition.

One wrong hire can cost a small company immeasurably. Company culture, productivity, and even products and services can be impacted. The term “hire slow, fire fast” certainly has its appropriate placement in a small business setting, but what if it isn’t that cut and dry?
“If these initial steps have not been taken, this employee has not been set up for success and any further assessment would be premature."
Before assessing a team member, a leader must take inventory on a couple of things. If these initial steps have not been taken, this employee has not been set up for success and any further assessment would be premature.
Assuming the foundation is readied, it’s important to consider these next points:
Are they meeting their metrics?
Can they grow into the role in a reasonable amount of time with additional support?
If the answer to both is “no”, the employee is absolutely in the wrong seat. Determining if they are in the wrong company is a bit more nuanced. Consider the following:
How do they contribute to the company #culture? A solid culture contributor can be very hard to replace. Think about what the company would lose by this employee leaving.
Are they aligned with and do they exhibit the company’s core values? Aligning on #values is what unites a team and should be heavily considered.
What #transferable skills have they demonstrated or developed?
It is much easier to teach skill than it is to build character. To know if someone is right for the team, it’s important to get to the root of who they are. It will be worth the extra effort to be sure of who to #invest in.
